Square Piano by Astor & Company, ca 1804 ~ Sold ~

$7,900.00

From the owner:

A rare in the US, fully restored, square piano dating to roughly 1804. The case is made by Clementi (stamped serial number 2799) and the internals were made by Astor & co. (serial number 1579). The action is Clementi's patented double action.  FF-c4, double strung throughout.

This instrument has been fully restored very carefully over the last 7 years using only period appropriate materials and in close conversation with several other square piano historians. All hinge leathers are new, lifter hammer leathers are new, hopper springs are new, restrung with Rose fortepiano wire using a Clementi string schedule, sound board was made by Tom Strange of SC (bridge and all bracings are original). All hammers are original with original leather covers (except for two hammer leathers).

This instrument has been used in several concerts by Patrick Hawkins and Randal Love. Currently tuned to A=415. Past Youtube recordings are pre-sound board replacement. Current recording available of myself playing the instrument (I am a flute player primarily, so do not judge my technique too harshly!) Current video: Mozart Sonata K. 284 https://youtu.be/wUfeoBO23yo

Past performances:

Devienne Quartet for piano, flute, viola, and horn: https://youtu.be/jKojeTnU4ag

Clementi Sonata No. 1 Op 21: https://youtu.be/azKwydA9i0M

This instrument comes with the period piano stool pictured (dates to ca. 1815), complete diameter spools of Rose wire, broadwood tuning hammer, string schedule, and various spare parts. All legs screw off for transport (including the pedal) and legs are numbered.
